How To Clean Your Ceiling Fan

How many of you have ceiling fans in your home?

If you do, take just a few minutes and walk around and take a look at the blades.

What do you see?

It always amazes me how dusty these can get, in fact, they can get downright disgusting.

Even with keeping my furnace filters changed, it seems that these are just a dust magnet!

It would seem that ceiling fans are the perfect dust magnet, would you agree?

They have been turned off for quite some time now, and as we look forward to doing some spring cleaning, I’d like to share with you a tip that I’ve found to work quite well when it comes to cleaning the blades.

I used to use an extended ceiling fan duster for this task.

While that worked ok, it sometimes would create an even bigger mess.

The dust would get stirred up, and even though I laid down a towel or sheet down underneath, I’d still end up getting dust all over the floor, furniture, me, and whatever else was in the area.

When I was finished, I often wondered if I didn’t create an even bigger mess and experienced a mini dust storm in my house!

There’s got to be a better way – and there is.

A trick that works quite well is using a pillowcase.

Usually everyone has an old pillowcase laying around.

Find a sturdy ladder and position that under the fan.

Climb up the ladder, take your old pillowcase and slide the fan blade into it.

Then, take your hand and slide the pillowcase towards you.

As you do this, the dust is falling into the pillowcase.

Rotate the blades around and do this for each blade until you are done.

Once you are finished, take the pillowcase outside to shake it out, or use a vacuum to get all of the dust out of it.

I can’t tell you how much easier this is to get this done this way!

No more dust cloud, or dust all over me, my dog, or whatever else was in the way.

Let’s not stop with just cleaning the fan blades.

There may be some other areas that need attention!

While you are up on the ladder, be sure to check the light bulbs and replace any that are burned out.

If your fan has globes over the lights, you can dust these in the same fashion, or it might be easier to use a smaller dust cloth for each one.

Sometimes using a cloth that is slightly damp will help you wipe the dust off easily.

These can get quite dusty over time as well, so be sure to wipe off each one.

A can of compressed air can be used to blow out any area in the motor that may have collected dust over time as well.

I would recommend cleaning your fan at least twice a year.

We don’t use our fans in our house in the winter, (some people do), so I usually like to give them a good cleaning in the fall and in the spring before I turn them on for spring/summer use.

If you use your fans all year around, I would suggest cleaning them more frequently.

Routine and preventative maintenance will help increase the life of your ceiling fans, and keep those dust causing allergens under control.

Plus a nice clean ceiling fan adds to the sparkle of a clean home.

If you aren’t so inclined to climb up on ladders to do this anymore, give Charter Handyman Services a call, and I’d be happy to help you with this routine maintenance item in your home – I’ll even bring the pillowcase. 😊

With the pillowcase technique, hopefully this chore will be something that will be easier to do, and our ceiling fans will be clean and ready for the warmer weather!
