Have any of you had the opportunity to assemble furniture?
This is a tedious chore if you aren't sure what you are doing, or the instructions aren't clear.
I've put together a few pieces from IKEA, and I never knew there were so many pieces and screws!
If you are the DIY type and want to give this task a try, I've got a few tips and tricks to share with you to help you avoid unnecessary frustration, and potentially damaging your new furniture.
Tip #1: Make sure you have a large space in which to assemble the furniture.
Make sure the area is carpeted, or put down a blanket or furniture pads. This will save you from potentially scratching the furniture, as well as helping you keep all of the parts and pieces together in one place.
Tip #2: CAREFULLY unpack the boxes and containers.
Did you see CAREFULLY in big letters? That is key here! Use caution when you sort the parts and pieces. Carefully inspect them to be sure they aren't damaged. Once you start assembling the pieces, you can't return them. So be sure you carefully inspect each piece! Locate the directions in the materials.
Tip #3: READ THE DIRECTIONS.
Did you notice all three words are in capital letters? This is because most times this tends to get overlooked. If there is an inventory list with the directions, be sure you go through the list and check off each piece to be sure it was included. More than once, items have been known to be missed, so this is very important.
As I mentioned READ THE DIRECTIONS, and maybe even read them a few times to be sure you have a good understanding before you begin.
Tip #4: Gather your tools.
Make sure you have all the tools necessary to assemble the furniture. If you don't have the tools, you will need to purchase them. Using the wrong tools could damage your furniture.
Tip #5: Get some help.
Most pieces of furniture requires a two person assembly. One set of hands holds the pieces together, while the other set tightens screws, bolts, or performs another part of the assembly process. This is definitely a case where two sets of hands are better than one!
Tip #6: Don't rush.
If you don't take your time, you can make mistakes that could potentially damage your furniture or lead to a safety hazard. Refer back to the directions frequently, and follow them step by step. Slow and steady wins the race here.
Tip #7: Check and double check.
I would recommend after completing each step from the instructions that you verify it a second time to be sure you have completed it correctly. This prevents you from making a mistake, and not catching it at the time. Checking and double checking will prevent big problems and headaches later on.
Tip #8: Disregard steps 1-7 and just hire a professional!
If you don't want to waste the time, energy, frustration and potentially run the risk of damaging your new furniture, hire an expert like myself who has experience in furniture assembly.
It is well worth the investment to have a pro do this for you; especially when you have a considerable investment in the furniture - why risk damaging it?
